Arizona Releases Medical Marijuana Rules

In late March of 2011, Arizona issued its medical marijuana rules for doctors and for patients who are seeking to become a part of the Arizona Medical Marijuana Program. The state approved medical cannabis for the treatment of debilitating conditions in late 2009, but the law didn’t take effect until April of this year.

On the 14th, the Arizona Department of Health Services will begin accepting applications from patients that have been recommended medical marijuana by their doctors. The state will only be approving applications that meet their criteria and that are properly completed and submitted, per the Arizona medical marijuana policy.

In accordance with the voter passed Proposition 203 from November of 2010, the law provides legal protection to patients who are using approved medical marijuana. Patients are allowed to obtain 2 ½ ounces of medical cannabis from dispensaries every two weeks, or cultivate up to 12 plants for personal usage if they reside 25 miles or further from any medical marijuana dispensaries in Arizona. The state has approved the opening of between 120 – 126 dispensaries, which makes the number comparable to the amount of pharmacies in the state.
